129 terror financing bank accounts blocked by SBP

KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan on Wednesday has blocked 129 bank accounts suspected to have been used for terror financing.

According to sources, the central bank has so far blocked 121 bank accounts, having a sum of around Rs1 billion, under the United Nations regulations to check international terror financing.

Another eight accounts having a sum of Rs3.5 million have been blocked under the directives issued by the Federal Interior Ministry.

SBP officials said that the move is part of central bank’s internal mechanism to detect and block dubious financial transactions.

Following the brutal Peshawar school attack in December 2014, Pakistan has launched a comprehensive National Action Plan to fight terrorism which, inter alia, includes measures to choke terror financing.
