TEHRAN: At least 20 naval personnel lost their lives when an Iranian destroyer mistakenly shot and sank a second Iranian vessel during a naval exercise, said an unofficial report by the country’s armed force.
The incident, termed as a ‘human error’ by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), happened in the Persian Gulf on Sunday when a C-802 Noor missile was fired from the Jamaran and accidentally struck the Konarak.
Konarak, a general-purpose vessel which had recently been added to the Navy’s fleet, was carrying 30 to 40 crew members including the commander. The reports claimed that the commander of the vessel is also among the dead.
