Zardari got 411 electoral votes to become the 14th President of Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Asif Ali Zardari won the Presidential elections held here and the provincial capitals on Saturday (9th March, 2024), bagging 411 electoral votes.

ECP has proclaimed that the PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari had received 411 electoral votes in the presidential election against his opponent PkMAP Chairman Mahmood Khan Achakzai, who got 181 votes.

CJP Qazi Faez Isa will administer an oath to President-elect Zardari at the President House (for the second 5-year-long tenure) 4pm on Sunday (10th March, 2024) when the extended five-year tenure of Dr. Arif Alvi will expire.

PkMAP Chairman Mehmood Khan Achakzai, gracefully accepting his defeat, congratulated Zardari and asked all the stakeholders to sit together and attempt to solve the problems the country is facing.

ISLAMABAD: PM Shehbaz Sharif felicitated Zardari for winning the Presidential elections.

According to details 381 votes were cast in the Parliament House, out of which 255 were given to Zardari and 119 to Achakzai. Zardari got 246 votes in Punjab Assembly (where Achakzai managed to get only 2 votes).

151 Sindh MPAs voted for Zardari and 9 for Achakzai (one vote was rejected); 91 KP MNAs voted for Achakzai, Zardari got 17 (8 electoral) votes (one vote was rejected); All the 47 MPAs of Balochistan Assembly opted to vote Zardari.

1,093 voters from Senate, National Assembly and Provincial Assemblies had a chance to vote to elect the 14th president of Pakistan 10am to 4pm on Saturday (9th March, 2024), but many (including JUI-F, JI) lawmakers boycotted the polls.

PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari (who previously served as the 11th president of Pakistan from 2008 to 2013, following the ouster of Gen Pervez Musharraf,) was the candidate of the ruling coalition while PTI-led opposition alliance fielded Mahmood Khan Achakzai for the post.

Asif Ali Zardari was backed by PPP, PML-N, MQM-P, BAP, IPP, ANP, PML-Q, NP and PML-Z. Whereas, PkMAP President Mahmood Khan Achakzai was supported by PTI, MWM and GDA.

APP Adds: Asif Ali Zardari, the President of the Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPPP), has been elected as the 14th President of Pakistan by securing 411 votes, according to the results announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
Zardari, who previously served as president from 2008 to 2013, is now poised to succeed the outgoing President Dr. Arif Alvi.
He secured victory in the presidential race, surpassing his rival candidate, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the chief of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party and nominee of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), who secured 181 votes. According to the ECP, the presidential polls held simultaneously at the Parliament House and the four provincial assemblies today saw participation from a total of 1,044 voters.
Among the votes cast, nine were deemed invalid.Total valid votes cast were 1,035.
Following the application of the provisions outlined in paragraph 18 of the Second Schedule of the Constitution to the total valid votes, Zardari garnered 411 votes and Achakzai count amounted to 181 votes. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) stated that the official tally of results on Form-VII will be compiled and sent to the federal government on Sunday, once the original records from the Presiding Officers are received, enabling the federal government to issue the formal notification. According to ECP, total seats in electoral college were 1,185. Out of which 92 seats were vacant. Remaining 1,093 were required to cast their votes. Based on the breakdown of votes, out of the votes cast in both the National Assembly and Senate, Zardari from PPPP secured 255 votes,
while Achakzai from PkMAP attained 119 votes. Additionally, one votes were deemed invalid. As many as 47 members of Balochistan Assembly, exercised their voting rights. Provisional results indicate that PPPP’s Zardari
received all 47 votes, while no legislators supported Achakzai. In the Sindh Assembly, Zardari from PPPP obtained 151 votes, while Achakzai secured nine; one vote was deemed invalid. In the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, Zardari secured 17 out of the total 109 votes, while Achakzai obtained 91 votes. One vote was rejected. In the Punjab Assembly, Zardari garnered 246 votes, while Achakzai received 100 votes. Additionally, six votes were rejected. Total votes cast were 352.

Earlier, APP reported: The voting to elect 14th president of the country continues in the National Assembly, with Abdul Hakeem Baloch from the People’s Party casting the first vote, followed by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, presidential candidate Asif Ali Zardari, Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Ishaq Dar and Omar Ayub.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has completed all preliminary arrangements for the polling process, which began at 10:00 a.m. and is scheduled to end at 4:00 p.m.
Two counters have been established in the National Assembly Hall for voters. Those whose names begin with letters A to N are casting their votes at Counter One, while those with names from O to Z are voting at Counter Two.
Former President Asif Ali Zardari, representing the ruling coalition, and nationalist leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai, representing the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) and other opposition parties, are candidates in the presidential election.
For the presidential election, the Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court has been designated as the presiding officer for both the Senate and the National Assembly.
Senator Sherry Rehman has been designated as the polling agent for Asif Ali Zardari, while Senator Shafiq Tareen serves as the polling agent for Mehmood Khan Achakzai
