KABUL: Authorities here have confirmed that an Afghan fighter Khan Mohammad, convicted in 2008 on narco-terrorism charges, and incarcerated for life in the state of California, has been released in exchange for 2 American citizens ( William McKenty and Ryan Corbett) on Tuesday (21st Jan, 2025).
Interestingly, following the (two-years-long parleys, prisoners exchange deal was agreed upon in 2024, the news about the swap was announced after Donald Trump commenced his second tenure at the White House. It is pertinent to mention here that the trade was brokered by Qatar, that has not only hosted several rounds of US-Taliban negotiations but had also provided logistical assistance in order to get them out of Afghanistan.
Asking for privacy, the family of William McKenty stated: “Today, our hearts are filled with overwhelming gratitude and praise to God for sustaining Ryan’s life and bringing him back home after what has been the most challenging and uncertain 894 days of our lives.” Ryan Corbett had lived in Afghanistan for many years with his family and was detained by the Taliban a couple of years ago when some business matters took him back to Kabul.
