DAVOS: President Donald Trump, during a live video appearance addressed the World Economic Forum here on Thursday (23rd Jan, 2025).
Harboring on the subject of Russia-Ukraine war, the President said his administration would commence efforts to secure a peace settlement. Trump stated he wanted to meet Vladimir Putin soon to end the conflict. Terming the Russia-Ukraine war an absolute killing field he held that “nobody has seen such scenes since WWII”.
When asked whether there will be a peace deal in the Russia-Ukraine war when he speaks at Davos again next year, Trump maintained: “You have to ask Russia. Ukraine is ready to make a deal.” Speaking about Sino-US terms, American President said his country wanted fairness and a level-playing field and did not want China to take advantage of USA.
He spoke about the trade imbalance between US-China as well as other Asian countries. Trump hoped China could help US end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war: “They have a great deal of power over that situation!” He said that Putin and other world leaders would support his idea of working with China on denuclearisation.
Trump said his administration would cut the corporate tax rate in the country to fifteen percent for manufacturers who produce their ware in USA: “…Come make your product in America, but if you don’t it’s your prerogative, but very simply, you will pay a tariff, differing amounts, which will direct hundreds of billions of dollars even trillions of dollars into our Treasury.” Other points he touched included major intervention in the oil market.
While asking KSA and OPEC to bring the cost of oil down, he also urged the Saudi Arabia to augment its investments in the USA to one trillion dollars. He not only pointed towards high taxes and tariffs of EU but also reiterated his suggestion apropos Canada becoming a state of US. He reminded that 250th Anniversary of USA would be observed in 2026; the very year US will host World Cup jointly with Mexico and Canada; 2028 Olympics will be held in LA.
