OTTAWA: Responding to Trump’s move of imposing 25 percent levy on Canadian/ Mexican (and 10% on Chinese) commodities, Canada has announced 25 percent tariffs on American goods.
While China stated that it would take necessary countermeasures to defend its legitimate rights and interests, Mexico too is all set to retaliate by soon announcing similar tariffs on USA goods.
Canadian PM, talking to journalists on Saturday (1st Feb 2025) at a Presser said: “We don’t want to be here, we didn’t ask for this.”
The levy on thirty billion dollars worth of US commodities would come into force on 4th of February, 2025. Giving time to Canadian firms to adjust tariffs on another 125 billion worth of goods would be imposed.
According to details the commodities that are targeted by the Canadian move include: American beer, wine, bourbon, fruits, fruit juices, vegetables, perfumes, clothing, shoes, household appliances, sporting goods and furniture.
It may be recalled that by means of 3 executive orders, US president had imposed the twenty-five percent tariff on Mexican and Canadian imports commencing from 4th January.
China, retaliating to Trumps imposition of ten percent levy on Chinese products, stated besides taking other countermeasures it would challenge Trump’s move at WTO. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, took to the X (Twitter) to inform that she had instructed her minister of economy to take retaliatory measures.
