US lawmaker calls for the release of Imran Khan

WASHINGTON: Republican Senator Joe Wilson – close to President Donald Trump – speaking on the floor of the house during a general debate Friday (7th Feb, 2025) has called for the release of former PM Imran Khan.

As the Chair allowed him to speak apropos Pakistan, Senator Joe Wilson stated: “Pakistan has been a valued partner of the United States for 70 years, and our relationship is strongest when Pakistan embraces democratic principles and the rule of law...

Pakistan’s military has undermined democracy by jailing former PM Imran Khan…President Trump has survived a corrupt judicial system and knows the danger of persecution…Pakistan should release Imran Khan, restoring democracy”.

It is pertinent to mention here that Congressman Wilson, who often addresses the issue of Pakistan, happens to be a key member of the House Foreign Affairs and Armed Services Committees and heads the Republican Policy Committee.

A day earlier, (6th Feb, 2025), he wrote a letter addressed to the Pakistani PM, President and COAS, urging for the release of Imran Khan: “Dear Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah,

A strong US-Pakistan relationship is in the national interest of both of our countries. In the over 75 years of bilateral relations between the US and Pakistan our relationship has been strongest when Pakistan embraces its democratic ideals of rule of law.

“I write with regard to the unjust detention of the former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan. I have many disagreements with Mr. Khan, particularly his stances in support of the Chinese Communist Party, and War Criminal Putin. However, democracy cannot work if political opponents are unjustly detained on politicized charges rather than defeated in the ballot box.

“I urge Pakistan to uphold democratic institutions, human rights, and the rule of law, and respect the fundamental guarantees of due process, freedom of press, freedom of assembly, and freedom of speech of the people of Pakistan. I urge Pakistan to free Imran Khan. Such a step would be a major step towards strengthening US Pakistan relations: Joe Wilson Member of Congress.”

Wilson, who represents South Carolina’s 2nd congressional district and serves as assistant majority whip, took to the X (Twitter) on Friday (7th Feb, 2025) to make the appeal public “Grateful to send this letter today to the political and military leaders of Pakistan to Free Imran Khan.”
