MARMARA PENITENTIARIES CAMPUS: Ekrem Imamoglu, the 54-year-old Mayor of Istanbul, who was arrested on corruption charges (obviously as a result of a political vendetta), has been sent to jail here Sunday (23rd March, 2025).
It is pertinent to mention here that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is a political rival of Ekrem Imamoglu who leads Erdogan in a number of polls. Terming them unimaginable accusations and slanders, Ekrem Imamoglu has denied the charges.
While Ekrem Imamoglu’s arrest triggered mass protests across the country, the Interior Ministry proclaimed that he has been removed from mayoral duty after his jailing ahead of trial. Meanwhile, 1100 protesters and journalists have been taken into custody by Police.
