Putin proposes direct talks with Kyiv, Trump ready to work with both sides

MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin, sans mentioning the 30-day truce ) suggested by Kyiv and its allies [(to commence from Monday 12th May, 2025], proposed holding direct talks with Ukraine.

Putin maintained that Russia was set on serious negotiations with Ukraine to establish a long-term durable peace. Issues to be discussed and resolved include NATO’s expansion eastwards and its size. Tired of the slowness of the process, Donald Trump said: “I am starting to doubt that Ukraine wants a deal!”

KYIV: The leaders of France, Britain, Germany, Poland and Ukraine, who met here on 10th May, dismissed Putin’s direct-talk offer, saying Russia must first accept the 30-day ceasefire proposal.

__________

US President Donald Trump maintaining that he would continue to work with both sides, asked to think of the hundreds of thousands of lives that will be saved from the never ending bloodbath:A potentially great day for Russia and Ukraine! Think of the hundreds of thousands of lives that will be saved as this never ending “bloodbath” hopefully comes to an end.

It will be a whole new, and much better, WORLD. I will continue to work with both sides to make sure that it happens. The USA wants to focus, instead, on Rebuilding and Trade. A BIG week upcoming!” It is pertinent to mention here that on Sat (9th May, 2025) French, British, German and Polish leaders visited Kyiv and with the support of US President urged to commit to an unconditional ceasefire.

It may be recalled that during his 14th April meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky at Oval Office, while blaming him for commencing the war with Russia, Donald Trump pointed out: “You don’t start a war against someone 20 times your size and then hope that people give you some missiles.”

US had donated 69 billion dollars to Ukraine in military aid from 2022 till 2024. All other 9 donors doled out a total of 56.8 billion dollars:

1) Germany ($13.6 billion),

2) UK ($10.8 billion),

3) Denmark ($8.1 billion),

4) Netherlands ($6.3 billion),

5) Sweden ($5 billion),

6) Poland ($3.9 billion),

7) France ($3.8 billion),

8) Canada ($2.8 billion), &

9) Finland ($2.5 billion).

Ukrainian President Zelensky, who was very close to USA under the Biden Administration, has been termed as a dictator without elections by Donald Trump here on Wednesday (19th Feb 2025). “Think of it, a modestly successful comedian, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, talked the United States of America into spending $350 Billion Dollars, to go into a War that couldn’t be won, that never had to start, but a War that he, without the US and ‘TRUMP,’ will never be able to settle.”

Reacting to the US President Donald Trump’s comments, Zelenskyy maintained that Trump administration must respect the truth regarding the Ukraine-Russia war that entered 4th year in Feb, 2925. It is pertinent to mention here that following the Trump-Putin telephonic conversation and the parleys between US and Russian delegations in Riyadh on 18th Feb, Zelensky angered Trump by saying that he was living in a disinformation space. Zelensky was responding to Trumps statement that Kyiv could have made a deal earlier to end the war, but not Russia.

Trump stated that Ukraine should not receive any more aid without getting anything in return. Following the 4-hour long rendezvous in Riyadh on 18th February, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the meeting was the first step of a long and difficult journey to ending the war in Ukraine. One of the promises Trump made during his campaign was that he wanted the war to end ASAP (even it it means giving up terrain to Moscow).
