Pakistan supports a Syrian-led resolution: FO

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan, hailing the US decision to lift all sanctions on Syria, has on Thursday (15th May, 2025) reaffirmed its commitment towards Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity saying Pakistan supported a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned resolution.

FO, pointing out that Pakistan had consistently advocated for constructive engagement and dialogue, maintained: “The easing of sanctions is expected to facilitate economic growth, improve access to essential services, and support the rebuilding efforts of the Syrian authorities…We commend the commitment of all countries.”

It may be recalled that President Donald Trump met Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa (a former Islamic militant who led the ouster of the Assad regime) in Riyadh on 14th May, after announcing that the US would lift all sanctions and attempt to normalise ties with Damascus.

Trump revealed the major policy shift at the US and Gulf Arab countries summit after the rendezvous with Ahmed Al-Sharaa in the presence of MBS. According to White House Trump also asked Syrian President to normalise ties with Israel.

President Donald Trump, while speaking at Saudi Investment Forum on 13th May, said that he planned to lift sanctions on Syria to give them a chance at greatness.

“Syria, they’ve had their share of travesty, war, killing in many years. That’s why my administration has already taken the first steps toward restoring normal relations between the United States and Syria for the first time in more than a decade,” US President Donald Trump said.

He informed that he had discussed the matter with KSA Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman (MBS) and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan: “The sanctions were brutal and crippling and served as an important — really an important function — nevertheless, at the time. But now it’s their time to shine Good luck, Syria. Show us something very special.”
