US-Iran hold 5th round of nuclear talks in Rome

ROME: US-Iran negotiators resumed the nuclear talks (through Omani mediators) here Friday (23rd May, 2025) attempting to resolve a decades-long dispute apropos Tehran’s nuclear plans.

According to details the fifth round of parleys was led by FM Iran Abbas Araghchi and US special envoy to the ME Steve Witkoff.

Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi took to the X to state: “The fifth round of Iran US talks have concluded today in Rome with some but not conclusive progress. We hope to clarify the remaining issues in the coming days, to allow us to proceed towards the common goal of reaching a sustainable and honourable agreement. From the eternal city of Rome I wish to thank our Italian friends for hosting us again for the Iran US talks today and for their strong support for peace and security.”

It may be recalled that US President wants to stop Iran from producing atom bombs. Whereas, Iran wants to get rid of the shackles that is economically proving to be devastating to this oil-rich country. It is pertinent to mention here that Iran has been asserting that its nuclear program is civilian. Washington is of the view that Iran’s uranium enrichment program could enable it to develop nuclear bombs commencing a regional arms race threatening Tel Aviv.

For the first time US President Donald Trump admitted on 16th May, that his administration had sent a proposal to Iran, on his way back home after wrapping-up a 4-day trip to the Gulf. Earlier, Trump’s Envoy for Middle East Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met a number of times to discuss Tehran’s ‘rapidly advancing nuclear program’. week after the 2nd round in Rome, the third round of indirect Iran-US talks (through Omani mediators) were held on 26th April.
