TEHRAN: Following five rounds of nuclear talks, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said Wednesday (4th June, 2025) that American proposal contradicted Iran’s belief in self reliance.
According to him shunning the process of uranium enrichment was hundred percent against Iran’s interest. “Uranium enrichment is the key to our nuclear programme and the enemies have focused on the enrichment…The proposal that the Americans have presented is 100pc against our interests … The rude and arrogant leaders of America repeatedly demand that we should not have a nuclear programme. Who are you to decide whether Iran should have enrichment?…
“Independence means not waiting for the green light from America and the likes of America…If we have 100 nuclear power plants but don’t have enrichment, they will be of no use to us…nuclear power plants need fuel to operate…If we cannot produce this fuel domestically, we have to reach out to the United States, which may have dozens of conditions.”
Proposal was handed over Saturday (31st May, 2025) by Oman that had meditated talks between the FMs of the two countries.
Following his rendezvous with IAEA Chief Rafael Grossi, Iranian FM Seyyed Abbas Araghchi on Monday (2nd June, 2025) stated: “If the goal is to deprive Iran of its peaceful activities, then certainly no agreement will be reached.“
While Iran is pursuing talks with US on its nuclear programme, IAEA has noted that Iran happens to harbour 408.6 kgs uranium enriched to 60% that exceeds 45 times the limit authorised by the 2015 agreement with global powers.
“The significantly increased production and accumulation of highly enriched uranium by Iran, the only non-nuclear weapon State to produce such nuclear material, is of serious concern,” the IAEA stated. The nuclear watchdog also laments lack of cooperation from Iran over its scrutiny of nuclear programme.
On 26th May Iran had made it clear following the 5th round of nuclear talks, that it would not suspend uranium enrichment in order to secure a nuclear deal with USA.
President Masoud Pezeshkian asserted that Iran would be able to survive even if nuclear talks with US failed: “It’s not like we will die of hunger if they refuse to negotiate with us or impose sanctions. We will find a way to survive.”
Iran’s nuclear chief Mohammad Eslami, while talking to journalists in Tehran, said if an agreement was signed, Iran would consider accepting American inspectors through IAEA: “Countries that were hostile to us and behaved unprincipledly over the years — we have always tried not to accept inspectors from those countries.”
Speaking to journalists at a Presser held in Tehran, Irani spokesman said that Tehran would not freeze enrichment for three years, as demanded by the USA, in order to sign a deal with Trump Administration. USA believes that Iran would produce nuclear weapons that would ultimately be used against Israel.
Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi took to the X to state: “The fifth round of Iran US talks have concluded today in Rome with some but not conclusive progress. We hope to clarify the remaining issues in the coming days, to allow us to proceed towards the common goal of reaching a sustainable and honourable agreement. From the eternal city of Rome I wish to thank our Italian friends for hosting us again for the Iran US talks today and for their strong support for peace and security.”
US President wants to stop Iran from producing atom bombs. Whereas, Iran wants to get rid of the shackles that is economically proving to be devastating to this oil-rich country. It is pertinent to mention here that Iran has been asserting that its nuclear program is civilian. Washington is of the view that Iran’s uranium enrichment program could enable it to develop nuclear bombs commencing a regional arms race threatening Tel Aviv.
“Iran has a peaceful nuclear programme… we are prepared to provide this assurance to any party or entity,” Tehran maintains.
