LA Riots: Governor asks Trump to withdraw troops

CALIFORNIA: Terming deployment of troops sans his consent a serious breach of state sovereignty, Governor Gavin Newsom requested President Donald Trump, by means of a letter, to remove the National Guard.

Earlier too, Gavin Newsom held: “That move is purposefully inflammatory and will only escalate tensions…We are in close coordination with the city and county, and there is currently no unmet need.”  For the third night thousands of rioters took to the streets of LA and clashed with the law enforcement authorities. They were manifesting against the President Trump’s immigration crackdown. Authorities resorted to use rubber bullets, tear gas and flashbangs.

California National Guard troops from San Bernardino county arrived in Los Angeles on 8th June to contain riots against (President Donald Trump & immigration raids by) ICE* that commenced two days ago. President Donald Trump, in order to ‘address the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester’, had ordered deployment of 2000 National Guard troops on Saturday, bypassing the authority of Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Former Human Rights Watch executive director Kenneth Roth posted on X: “This is the first time since 1965 that a president has deployed the National Guard without a request by a state governor. Then it was Johnson protecting civil rights protesters. Now it’s Trump creating a spectacle so he can continue his immigration raids.”

According to Pete Hegseth, the Defence Secretary, Pentagon was ready to mobilise active-duty troops if riots did not stop. He warned that Marines at nearby Camp Pendleton were on high alert. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated: “The Trump Administration has a zero tolerance policy for criminal behavior and violence, especially when that violence is aimed at law enforcement officers trying to do their jobs.”

LA Mayor Karen Bass taking to the X maintained: “Everyone has the right to peacefully protest, but let me be clear: violence and destruction are unacceptable, and those responsible will be held accountable.”
