Tirah, Enigma of the mortar attack that killed 2 kids

KP: Following proclamation by the security officials about compensation and free medical treatment to the killed and wounded, CM of the province on Monday (28th July, 2025) has announced a compensation of Rs. 25 lakh each to the wounded, and Rs. 1 crore each to the heirs of the seven protesters who were gunned down while protesting against two children’s death a week ago, when a mortar shell struck a house in Tank’s Raghzai village, that tribals say was meant for the militants active in this area.

When tribesmen converged at the gate of FC compound to manifest against the counter-terrorism operations, fire was opened killing and injuring the protesters. There are conflicting reports apropos the source of shooting. According to the district administration it was TTP militants who shot at the demonstrators. On the contrary, protesters point fingers at the guards posted at the gates. Earlier, when the kids were killed, the residents blocked the tank-South Waziristan Road, and demanded identification of those responsible.

A jirga was convened, which was consisted of the members of security forces, civil officers and tribal chiefs. The jirga maintained that no security force has the right to kill or injure the demonstrators, that happens to be a constitutional and democratic right of citizens. The jirga condemned the incident in strong terms, emphasising that peaceful protest is a constitutional and democratic right and that no security force has the right to fire on protesters. It has also been claimed that the mortar launcher had been identified and action is being taken against the culprit.
