LONDON: According to PM Keir Starmer, UK will recognise Palestinian state if Israel fails to take substantial steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza and to reach ceasefire.
While talking to journalists following a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday (29th July, 2025), Starmer maintained: “I have always said that we will recognise a Palestinian state as a contribution to a proper peace process at the moment of maximum impact for the two-state solution...I can confirm the UK will recognise the State of Palestine by the United Nations General Assembly in September, unless the Israeli government takes substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza, agree to a ceasefire and commit to a long-term sustainable peace reviving the prospect of a two-state solution.”
It is pertinent to mention here that Labour Party has been forcing PM Starmer to take a tougher line on Israel. Following the French President Emmanuel Macron’s proclamation that his country would recognise a Palestinian state in September, this pressure has augmented considerably. On 26th July he has confirmed that UK will airdrop aid in Gaza and evacuate children requiring medical assistance.
Following PM’s emergency telephonic conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK govt stated that the leaders had agreed that “it would be vital to ensure robust plans are in place to turn an urgently needed ceasefire into lasting peace…The prime minister set out how the UK will also be taking forward plans to work with partners, such as Jordan, to airdrop aid and evacuate children requiring medical assistance.”
