German mountaineer dies attempting to scale Laila Peak

GILGIT-BALTISTAN: Olympic and World Champion, 30-year-old Laura Dahlmeier, died when she was caught in a rock-fall while attempting to scale 6096 meters Laila Peak here a couple of days ago.

When, on Monday (28th July) Morning, Laura and her partner Marina Eva (also German) reached an altitude of 5,700 meters, she was hit by a rock. Despite the grave injury she did manage to establish contact with Eva. A rescue operation, involving Pakistan Army Helis and high-altitude porters, was launched.

But due to adverse weather she could not be reached. Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) Vice President Karrar Haidri announced: “German Olympic champion Laura Dahlmeier was confirmed dead on Wednesday after a tragic mountaineering accident in the high mountains of Pakistan.”
