India gets back Buddha’s ornaments

MUMBAI: Piprahwa Gems, linked to the Buddha’s remains, have been returned to India by Sotheby’s.

Although the jewels were about to be auctioned, India’s threats of going to the court and the pressure from Buddhist leaders world-wide, Sotheby’s returned the set after a couple of month of parleys between owner, buyer (Mumbai-based conglomerate Godrej Industries Group) and the government of India. The gems will be go on permanent display in India.
