Russian oil, Trump set to raise tariffs on India

WHITE HOUSE: President Donald Trump took to the Social Media to warn New Delhi, if it did not stop buying oil from Russia, he would substantially raise the tariff on Indian goods entering USA.

“India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open market for big profits.

“They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA…” President Trump stated.

He said on 30th July: “Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their tariff is far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country.

“Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE – ALL THINGS NOT GOOD! INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER, MAGA!”

It is pertinent to mention here that a 25% tariff on Indian products exported to the United States went into effect on Friday (1st August, 2025).

Interestingly, while India proclaimed it would continue buying oil from Russia despite Trump’s Tariff threats, White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller came up with a nouvelle accusation that New Delhi was financing Moscow’s war against Ukraine by buying its oil!: “What he (Trump) said very clearly is that it is not acceptable for India to continue financing this war by purchasing the oil from Russia,” he said.
