Yet another spell of rain hits Karachi on 20th Aug, death toll rises to 20

KARACHI: The Metropolis, sans water drainage system, was still suffering from the urban flooding and outages caused by the so-called heavy rain, has been hit yet again by a new spell on Wed (20th August, 2025) at 3PM, raising the death toll to 20.

On 19th Aug, twelve people died in rain-related incidents here, including four members of a family who expired when walls of their Gulistan-e-Jauhar house collapsed; a 50-year-old man drowned in a Gurumandar nullah; an 8-year-old boy in Orangi got buried under falling debris; 2 men perished due to electrocution.

Although lots of people complained of outage, KE claimed that 1,285 out of 2,100 feeders continued to supply electricity. Since due to rampant corruption, the budget meant for ameliorating the living condition of citoyens, is usurped to purchase lucrative real estate abroad, even a moderate rain kills people, submerge the Metropolis, inundate arteries like Sharah-e-Faisal and II Chundrigar Road.

Massive traffic jams due to flooded roads and underpasses kept the tax payers on the roads for hours. Hundreds of commuters had to leave their vehicles on the roads when fuel exhausted. Thousands of citoyens stranded on the roads had to spend the night with their families in the vehicles. Moreover, flights’ schedule was also disrupted. Anticipating further downpour, CM Sindh has announced 20th August, as provincial holiday.

Since, due to the deluge, workers failed to reach their places of work, supply chain was affected and thus industries failed to produce goods. Commodities ready to be sent abroad remained stuck in the factories as neither labourers nor transport was available to carry the consignments to the port. Many traders lamented that rain water entered their shops and warehouses and had destroyed their wares

Taking to the Instagram ZAB Jr held: “Our Karachi is drowning, heavy rainfall and a lack of initiative to fix the city’s infrastructure. Contractors work and pocket money while the very geography of the city is built on river deltas and flood plains, places naturally designed to collect and most importantly drain water.”
