Russia rules out a Putin-Zelenskyy tête-à-tête

MOSCOW/WASHINGTON: Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has confirmed on Friday (22nd Aug, 2025) that Russia and Ukraine were not pondering over the possibilities of a Putin-Zelinskyy tête-à-tête, particularly when President Donald Trump’s mediation initiative fizzled out.

Trump, who was preparing ground for the rendezvous of the duo, changed his mind on 22nd Aug, and compared them as oil and vinegar: “They don’t get along too well, for obvious reasons.” Meanwhile, Nato chief Mark Rutte visited Kyiv, largely to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine.

Following years of isolation, Vladimir Putin scored a diplomatic win when he had a 3-hour long rendezvous with Donald Trump at a airbase here on 15th Aug, in the first US-Russia Summit after the Feb 2022 invasion of Ukraine to ponder over peace deal.

Taking to the Truth Social Trump held: “It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which often times do not hold up.”

The brief summit ended sans any truce deal, and Putin invited Trump to Moscow for further talks apropos ending Ukraine War. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy met US president on 18th Aug along with European leaders’ delegation. (British PM Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Nato Secretary-General Mark Rutte, have proclaimed here on Sunday (17th Aug 2025) that they will accompany Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during White House meeting with US President Donald Trump to ponder over ways to end war with Russia, on 18th Aug, 2025).

President Donald Trump had a 2-hour-long telephonic conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on 19th June, during which they discussed modalities of truce with Ukraine.

Putin termed his talk with Trump as frank and substantive. Informing about his position on the ceasefire he said: “The US president expressed his position on the secession of hostilities, ceasefire, and from my end, I have emphasized that Russia stands for peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian crisis. We just need to outline the most effective routes of moving towards peace.” He thanked Trump for US support in “resuming the direct talks between Russia and Ukraine.” Meanwhile, Trump also talked to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
