LISBON: Ministry of Foreign Affairs here has proclaimed, by means of a statement, that Portugal will officially declare recognition of Palestine on Sunday (21st Sept, 2025).
World leaders will converge at UNGA Tuesday (23rd of Sept., 2025) to ponder over the Israel-Hamas war that commenced on 7th October, 2023. During the occasion a dozen countries will recognise the state of Palestine. It is pertinent to mention here that 2/3rd of the 193 members of United Nations already recognise Palestine as a state (that was granted, back in 2012, the status of non-member observer state.)
The world leaders will converge at the UN General Assembly Tuesday (22nd Sept, 2025) to ponder over the Israel-Hamas war that commenced on 7th of October. Cynics go haywire wondering why Hamas attacked Israel, killed 1200 men, women, children and took 251 hostage. Was the militant group of the view that due to the Israelis in their captivity Netanyahu will not attack and kill (65,000) Palestinians?

President of France Emmanuel Macron in his correspondence to President Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas, has proclaimed Thursday (24th July, 2025) that his country would recognise a Palestinian state in the month of Sept, 2025 at the UNGA.Taking to the X Macron stated: “Consistent with its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the State of Palestine.
“I will make this solemn announcement before the United Nations General Assembly this coming September.
“The urgent priority today is to end the war in Gaza and to bring relief to the civilian population.
“Peace is possible.
“We need an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and massive humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza. We must also ensure the demilitarization of Hamas, secure and rebuild Gaza.
“And finally, we must build the State of Palestine, guarantee its viability, and ensure that by accepting its demilitarization and fully recognizing Israel, it contributes to the security of all in the region.
“There is no alternative
“The French people want peace in the Middle East. It is our responsibility — as French citizens, alongside Israelis, Palestinians, and our European and international partners — to prove that peace is possible.
“In light of the commitments made to me by the President of the Palestinian Authority, I have written to him to express my determination to move forward.
“Trust, clarity, and resolve.
“We will achieve peace.”

According to PM Keir Starmer, UK will recognise Palestinian state if Israel fails to take substantial steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza and to reach ceasefire. While talking to journalists following a Cabinet meeting on 29th July, Starmer maintained: “I have always said that we will recognise a Palestinian state as a contribution to a proper peace process at the moment of maximum impact for the two-state solution...
“I can confirm the UK will recognise the State of Palestine by the United Nations General Assembly in September, unless the Israeli government takes substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza, agree to a ceasefire and commit to a long-term sustainable peace reviving the prospect of a two-state solution.”
It is pertinent to mention here that Labour Party had been forcing PM Starmer to take a tougher line on Israel. Following the French President Emmanuel Macron’s proclamation that his country would recognise a Palestinian state in September, this pressure has augmented considerably. On 26th July he has confirmed that UK will airdrop aid in Gaza and evacuate children requiring medical assistance.
Following PM’s emergency telephonic conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK govt stated that the leaders had agreed that “it would be vital to ensure robust plans are in place to turn an urgently needed ceasefire into lasting peace…The prime minister set out how the UK will also be taking forward plans to work with partners, such as Jordan, to airdrop aid and evacuate children requiring medical assistance.”

Following proclamations by France and UK, PM Mark Carney, flanked by FM Anita Anand , has announced on Wed (30th July, 2025) that Canada would recognise the State of Palestine at the 80th meeting of the UNGA in the month of September, 2025.
“Canada has long been committed to a two-state solution, an independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state living side by side with the State of Israel in peace and security,” Marc Carney said. Pointing towards dying of children due to starvation, Carney held: “Canada condemns the fact that the Israeli government has allowed a catastrophe to unfold in Gaza.”
He pointed out that the recognition partly depended on Palestinian Authority’s pledges that it was willing to do lead reforms and hold polls in 2026 sans Hamas.“Canada will always steadfastly support Israel’s existence as an independent state in the Middle East, living in peace and security,” Carney said. “Any path to lasting peace for Israel also requires a viable and stable Palestinian state and one that recognizes Israel’s inalienable right to security.”

On 11th August, PM of Australia Anthony Albanese has proclaimed that his country will recognise Palestinian state in the UNGA session, alongwith France, Britain and Canada. According to Anthony Albanese his government had received commitments from Mahmoud Abbas, President of Palestinian Authority, that the future state shall operate sans Hamas. “There is a moment of opportunity here, and Australia will work with the international community to seize it,” maintained Albanese, who had earlier pondered over the issue with PMs of UK, France, New Zealand and Japan.
