MANHATTAN: “I declare that today, France recognizes the State of Palestine”, proclaimed Emmanuel Macron here.
Macron maintained: “We must pave the way for peace…We must do everything within our power to preserve the very possibility of a two-state solution, Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security…”.
Israel, citing the 7th Oct (2023) attack by Hamas on Israel that claimed 1200 lives, held that recognising the state of Palestine would reward the militants who had also taken 251 hostages. It may be recalled since that in retaliation Israel killed over 54 Palestinians for each of its citoyen killed by Hamas.
Presently, Israel is in the process of capturing Gaza City by means of ground offensive. It is pertinent to mention here that sans approval of Security Council (where US can always use its veto), Palestine will not become a full UN member despite recognition from over 150 countries.
