KARACHI: Pakistan’s first prime minister Nawabzada Liaquat Ali Khan (1st Oct, 1895 – 16th Oct, 1951) was assassinated on this day in Rawalpindi, during a public gathering, 74 years ago.
Liaquat Ali Khan was born in Karnal (state of Haryana, British India). Following his edification from Aligarh Muslim University, Liaquat Ali Khan went to Oxford University. Former PM Liaquat Ali Khan was among those key figures who endeavoured with Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, from the platform of Pakistan Muslim League, striving to carve a new country out of the Sub-Continent. Following the creation of the Islamic Republic, Liaquat Ali Khan became its first prime minister.
His tenure, that commenced in 1947, came to an abrupt end on 16th Oct, 2051. Liaquat Ali Khan was buried within the Mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam compound. Despite passage of almost three fourth of a century, it is yet not known which forces were behind his murder. Cynics go haywire observing that in 2007 the 11th PM of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto too was killed at the very park (named after the 1st PM ) when she was leaving after addressing a public gathering just the way Liaquat Ali Khan was gunned down.
