Cricket: Sarfraz removed as Skipper from all formats

ISLAMABAD: Citing his bad performance Sarfraz Ahmed has been removed as captain in the Test as well as T20 formats by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Wicket-keeper-batsman Sarfraz Ahmed has also been dropped from the side ahead of Australia tour. Rumors were making rounds for quite some time apropos his removal from all formats due to dismal performance of the team under his leadership.

Commenting on the PCB decision he said:It has been an honor to lead Pakistan at the highest level. I want to thank all my colleagues, coaches and selectors who have helped me in this journey. My good wishes are with Azhar Ali, Babar Azam and the Pakistan cricket team, and I hope they will continue to grow stronger and stronger.”

Azhar Ali will lead the Green Shirts in the upcoming Tests against Australia as well as the World Test Championship in the 2019-20 season. Babar Azam will lead Pakistan in T20 matches against Australia and in the 2020 T20 World Cup.

Reacting to the development Azhar Ali said that Sarfaraz Ahmed had done an excellent job in transforming raw talent into experienced players. He said that he looked forward to inspiring those skillful players in Pakistan Cricket Team’s endeavors to collectively achieve world Cup Championship objectives and beyond.

Maintaining that there was no bigger honor than to captain the Pakistan national cricket team in the pinnacle format of the game he stated Azhar Ali: “I feel humbled, excited and privileged, and with the support of the team, look forward to justifying the faith that has been entrusted upon me for the World Test Championship.”

Babar Azam stated: “To be named captain of the No.1 ranked side in the world is the biggest thing that has happened to my career to date. I am ready for this challenge and also willing to learn more in the process. I feel it has been a natural progression for me and I am delighted that the PCB has put faith in my capabilities. Sarfaraz Ahmed has led the side in the shortest format by example and it is my responsibility to take forward his accomplishments so that we remain a consistent, attractive and powerful side.”
