Senate By-Polls: Coalition Govt Candidates Get 5/6 Seats

ISLAMABAD: Coalition Government’s candidates bagged 5 out of 6 seats in the Senate by-polls held simultaneously at the NA and the Provincial Assemblies from 9am to 4pm on Thursday (14th March, 2024).

It is pertinent to mention here that PTI was not able to participate in the Senate By-Polls sans Bat – its iconic election symbol.

These six seats were fallen vacant under Article 223 of the Constitution which prohibits lawmakers from holding dual membership:

“Subject to clause (2) if a member of either House or of a Provincial Assembly becomes a candidate for a second seat which, in accordance with clause (1), he may not hold concurrently with his first seat, then his first seat shall become vacant as soon as he is elected to the second seat.”

PPP’s Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani, who eventually will become the Senate’s Speaker (thanks to the deal with PML-N) has beaten SIC’s Ch. Ilyas Mehrban to regain his seat from here on Thursday (14th March, 2024).

In Islamabad overall 301 votes were cast: 204 for Gilani and 88 for Mehrban. Remaining nine votes were rejected.

Sindh: Sindh Assembly seats were fallen vacant due to the resignations of PPP’s Nisar Ahmed Khuhro and Jam Mehtab Dahar.

Here PPP’s Jam Saifullah Khan Dharejo got 58 votes while Muhammad Aslam Abro got 57 out of 124 votes cast to become senators. SIC’s Nazeerullah and Shazia Sohail got 4 votes each. (One vote was rejected).

Balochistan: Three seats were fallen vacant here due to the resignations of Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti, Prince Ahmad Umar Ahmadzai and Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri.

PPP’s Abdul Quddus Bizenjo got 23 votes, PML-N’s Mir Dostain Khan Domki got 17 votes and JUI-F’s Abdul Shakoor Khan got 16 votes to become senators.
