KARACHI: Marking the commencement of Hindu calendar, Diwali (festival of lights) is celebrated on 15th day of Kartika (in memory of Ram Chand who spent 14 years in tranquillity) and lasts for five days.
Diwali is a vital religious festival with racines in India.
It is also celebrated by Sikhs and Jains.
It was Mughal Emperor Akbar who laid the tradition of celebrating Diwali in Agra with fireworks outside the palace.
Akbar was the liberal Emperor who attempted to merge different religions to create Deen-e-Ilahi). Later other Mughal emperors also continued observing the festival in their forts.
