DAVOS (Switzerland): President Jose Raul Mulino, while speaking at the World Economic Forum panel discussion here on Wednesday (22nd Jan, 2025) has challenged Trump’s threat of taking back Panama Canal, a vital trade route for the USA.

Maintaining that Panama Canal was not a concession or a gift from the United States, President Jose Raul Mulino said that Trump’s claims were false and the Canal belongs to the citoyens of Panama.

It may be recalled that during his inaugural speech Trump had accused Panama of breaking a promise apropos remaining neutral. He alleged that the Canal was being operated by China. Newly re-elected President also accused the Panama authorities of not treating fairly and overcharging US ships.

PS: After US, China is the largest user of Panama Canal. Since Chinese commercial entities are using 21.4 percent of Panama Canal’s cargo volume, its presence is visible. But that does not mean what Trump insinuated in his inaugural speech: “China is operating the Panama Canal and we didn’t give it to China. We gave it to Panama and we’re taking it back!”
