WASHINGTON: Claiming that Canada and Mexico had failed to contain flow of illegal drugs and migrants into the US, Trump Administration on 4th March, 2025 has imposed 25% tariff on imports of commodities from these countries and a 20% tariffs on Chinese goods entering USA.

Responding to 20% percent US levies on Chinese products, China has imposed 10 to 20% import taxes on a number of American agricultural and food commodities.
Moreover, China, accusing them of supplying weapons to Taiwan, targeted ten US firms. Overall, on the grounds of national security, Beijing has imposed export and investment restrictions on 25 American entities.
It may be recalled that immediately after US levies (of 10%) came into effect (on 4th Feb), Beijing proclaimed the plan to retaliate. Levies on US products include fifteen percent border tax to be paid by importers of US coal and LNG products.
There is also ten percent tariff on American crude oil, agricultural machinery and large-engine cars. China has also imposed export controls on 25 rare metals, some of which are key components for many electrical products and military equipment.
Canada: Due to 25% tariff imposed by Trump on *all Canadian imports into USA and his push for Canada to become 51st state of America, the 40 million citoyens of this country are angry.
Canada retaliated by proclaiming imposition of 25% tariffs on $20.7 billion worth of American orange juice, beer, wine, bourbon & home appliances. PM Trudeau further said that if US did not lift the tariffs within 21 days his administration would impose taxes on an additional $86.2 billion US imports.
Pointing towards USMCA that was signed by Trump during his first term, Trudeau said US measures violated that truce: “Tariffs will disrupt an incredibly successful trading relationship,” he added.
Trudeau, while addressing the nation earlier, had stated: “Many among us will be affected by this, and we will have some hard times. I ask you to be there for each other. Now is the time to choose Canada…We prefer to solve our disputes with diplomacy. But we are ready to fight when necessary…
“This is a choice that, yes, will harm Canadians. But beyond that, it will have real consequences for you, the American people…As I have consistently said, tariffs against Canada will put your jobs at risk, potentially shutting down American auto assembly plants and other manufacturing facilities.
“They will raise costs for you, including food at the grocery stores and gas at the pump. They will impede your access to an affordable supply of vital goods crucial for U.S. security, such as nickel, potash, uranium, steel and aluminium,” PM Justin Trudeau stated on Saturday (1st of February, 2025).
Donald Trump took to the Social Media platform Truth Social on 2nd Feb to maintain that his country, that paid hundreds of billions of dollars to subsidize Canada, did not need Canadian products: “Without this massive subsidy, Canada ceases to exist as a viable country.”
Mexico: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is expected to announce her government’s response shortly. It may be recalled that on 3rd Feb President Donald Trump said that he was pausing the 25% tariffs on goods imported from Mexico for one month following Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s agreement to send ten thousands soldiers to the order to prevent drug trafficking immediately.
