Myanmar-Thai quake, 2056 deaths confirmed

BANGKOK: Thai and Myanmar authorities have confirmed the death of 2056 people, 3400 injured, as rescuers are pulling more and more dead/wounded out of the rubble of bâtiments that collapsed due to the 7.7 magnitude tremor that hit the region on Friday (28th March, 2025).

Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra had declared a state of emergency here and held an urgent huddle with the concerned higher-ups to ponder over the state of affairs. Airports are functioning normally, but few metro routes have stopped operating. Myanmar’s ruling military junta, that had declared a state of emergency in six regions and states has requested global community for support after the powerful quake jolted various regions of the country including the city of Sagaing.

Myanmar’s iconic Ava Bridge collapsed, fissures appeared on the roads and buildings crumbled when 6.4-magnitude aftershock occurred few minutes later. Scores of wounded citizens were transported to the capital Naypyidaw’s medical facility. Citoyens inhabiting the Chinese province of Yunnan also experienced tremors measuring 7.9 magnitude. Tremors have been reported from Cambodia, Bangladesh and India as well. International community has started sending well-equipped rescue teams to the region.
