KREMLIN: Two days before the expiry of Trump’s warning apropos augmentation of levies on commodities exported by Russia to USA if Moscow fails to stop the 42-month-long-war with Kyiv, Steve Witkoff, Envoy from Washington held talks with Putin here on Wednesday (6th August, 2025).
It is pertinent to mention here that following the Putin-Witkoff rendezvous Trump signed an executive order slapping 25% extra tariff on Indian commodities exported to USA. This was meant to stop India from buying Russian oil.

Meanwhile, Ukraine, with full-fledged support of the West, is relentlessly attacking Russia. For instance, on 3rd August the Mayor of Sochi reported that the massive oil depot fire, caused by a Ukrainian drone attack overnight, had been put off on.
Furthermore, the governor of Krasnodar region had informed that the incendie commenced when the fuel tank was hit by the Ukrainian drone’s debris. However, the blaze was contained by 127 firefighters. Meanwhile, the flights remained suspended for a while at the nearby airport.
China, Ukraine and USA: Following a four-hour-long meeting in Brussels on 2nd July with the Chief of EU Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, Chinese FM Wang Yi stated that his country could not accept Ukraine winning the war against Russia.
It has been reported that, contrary to Beijing’s public stand of neutrality, Wang Yi privately told Kaja Kallas that Russian defeat would enable USA to focus uniquely on China. Savants at the helm of affairs, while deciphering Chinese foreign minister’s remark insinuated that China would prefer a prolonged war in Ukraine to stop USA concentrating fully on it.
Later, on 4th July, Chinese spokesperson Mao Ning said during a regular briefing in Beijing: “China is not a party to the Ukraine issue…China’s position on the Ukraine crisis is objective and consistent, that is, negotiation, ceasefire and peace. A prolonged Ukraine crisis serves no one’s interests. Together with the international community and in light of the will of the parties concerned, we will continue playing a constructive role towards this end.
