Trumpian Tariffs: India says it will not bow down or appear weak

NEW DELHI: Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, while commenting on 50 % Trumpian Tariffs on Indian commodities has stated here on Friday (29th Aug, 2025) that his country would neither bow down nor ever appear weak.

Goyal, maintaining that India would focus on capturing new markets, claimed: “I can say with confidence that India’s exports this year will exceed 2024-25 numbers.”

It may be recalled that 50% Trumpian Tariffs on Indian imports took effect on Wednesday 27th August. US wants India to stop buying oil from Russia, that it says is helping Moscow finance the Ukrainian war.

Undaunted by the continuous blows of Trumpian Tariffs, China agreed with India on Tuesday (19th Aug, 2025) to resume direct flights (that were terminated between the two countries during COVID days following the 2020 border clash).

After the announcement of Chinese retaliatory tariffs, Trump had threatened to impose an extra fifty percent tariff on China (that vowed to fight to the end against the additional levies). Savants at the helm of affairs are of the view that the skirmishes could bring down both economies.

In order to further ameliorate their relationship, in response to Trump’s unpredictable foreign policies, the two neighbouring countries have staged a series of high-level bilateral visits and resultantly are all set to step up trade and investment flows.

Indian Foreign Minister maintained that peace on Indo-China borders was pertinent in order to nurture positive momentum in bilateral relationship: “This (discussing border issues) is very important because the basis for any positive momentum in our ties is the ability to jointly maintain peace and tranquility in the border areas.”

Subrahmanyam Jaishankar further held that India and China should pull back their forces that converged along the disputed border since 2020. Wang Yi, who is scheduled to see the Indian premier during his sojourn here will hold the 24th round of border talks with Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

On 16th Aug, an Indian spokesman stated, as a curtain-raiser, that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will, upon invitation, visit India and hold special representatives’ meeting to ponder over the issue of their shared boundary. It is pertinent to mention here that China and India plan to recommence trade that was discontinued in 2020 after a deadly skirmish involving troops stationed at both sides of the border.

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, visited China last July. Following his India tour, Wang Yi arrived in Islamabad for the Pakistan-China strategic dialogue.
