Japan, US sign a deal on rare earth

TOKYO: Newly elected PM of Japan Sanae Takaichi welcomed US President Donald Trump here on Tuesday (28th Oct, 2025).

During the rendezvous the PM of Japan and the President of USA signed a deal on rare earth minerals.

Japan has pledged to invest $550bn in the US to strengthen supply chains in pharmaceuticals and semiconductors.

The two leaders also inked a document reiterating the commitment apropos implementation of 15% tariff and other deals struck earlier.

Sanae Takaichi informed Donald Trump about the investments, companies in Japan have made in the US.

It may be recalled that in the month of July too, taking to Truth Social Donald Trump had said that Japan, one of America’s biggest trading partners, was set to invest $550 billion in the USA. President Donald Trump informed that Japan was set to open its economy to American goods such as cars, trucks and rice.

“We just completed a massive Deal with Japan, perhaps the largest Deal ever made. Japan will invest, at my direction, $550 Billion Dollars into the United States, which will receive 90% of the Profits,” said Trump. 15% tariff would be imposed on Japanese commodities & not 25% as threatened by President Trump earlier. The proclamation was welcomed by the then PM of Japan.

During his speech onboard the USS George Washington, Trump said Takaichi had told him earlier about plans for Toyota to put $10bn into building plants in USA.

President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met Japanese families whose loved ones were allegedly abducted by North Korea decades ago, but remain missing.

During his week-long Asia trip, Trump visited Malaysia and Japan. From the Land of the Rising Sun he will go to S. Korea on 29th Oct, and finally meet the Chinese leader Xi Jinping, the next day.
