London Marathon, Sawe makes history

LONDON: Sixty thousand runners participated in the 26.2-mile marathon held here on Sunday (26th April, 2026).

Sabastian Sawe made history at the London Marathon Sunday (27th April, 2026) by becoming the first athlete to run a sub-two-hour marathon in a competitive race.

The 30-year-old Kenyan crossed the line to win in one hour 59 minutes 30 seconds, more than one minute faster than the late Kelvin Kiptum’s previous record of 2:00:35, set in 2023.

29-year-old ⁠Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia broke her own world record in winning the London Marathon and crossed the finish line in two hours ⁠15 minutes and 41 seconds.
