ISLAMABAD: According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department a 5.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Islamabad and part of KP on Monday (27th April, 2026).

Epicentre of tremors (that originated at a depth of 170 kms) was located in the border region of Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Citoyens in Islamabad, Peshawar, Swat, Nowshera, Shangla and Buner have experienced the jolts. But no casualties or damage were reported.

Isloolites are quite used to tremors. For instance, on 3rd of August last year, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake shook Pakistan’s northern areas at 12.10 am. Tremors were felt in Peshawar, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Hasan Abdal, Abottabad, Chakwal, Mardan, Attock etc. The epicentre was located in Farkhār, Afghanistan. United States Geological Survey recorded its depth at 122.6 kilometres.
Similarly, on 15th of February, last year, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake had jolted the northern parts of Pakistan. With epicentre located 8 kms southwest of Rawalpindi, tremors with a depth of 17 kms shook high-rise buildings. Citoyens of Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Azad Kashmir, …
Samahni, Bhanbar, Chakwal, Murree, Tala Gang, Kallar Kahar, Gujar Khan, Rawat, Kahota, Taxila, Kallar Syedan, Jhelum and surrounding areas felt the tremors and vacated the batiments they were in, while reciting verses from Holy Quran. However, no casualties or damage to property had been reported.
Tremors are no alien to this region. One may recall that a magnitude six quake killed 1411, injured 3124 people and destroyed 5400 houses in the eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar, on 31st Aug, last year. Since the epicentre is situated in the rough mountainous terrain, rescuers were finding it very difficult to reach the victims trapped under the rubble.
According to sources all the batiments in numerous villages had been flattened by the tremors. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres stated: “I stand in full solidarity with the people of Afghanistan after the devastating earthquake that hit the country earlier today.”
Taking to X, delegation of the European Union to Afghanistan stated: “The EU extends its heartfelt condolences to all affected by the recent devastating earthquake in Afghanistan’s Kunar & Nangarhar provinces. Our humanitarian partners are actively on the ground, providing critical aid to the victims. We stand in full solidarity with Afghans.”
