M. M. ALAM

WASHINGTON: Real-Estate Mogul Donald Trump 70 has made history by becoming the oldest president in history of USA (to be elected to a first presidential term).

In his first speech as President-elect Donald Trump while addressing his Democratic opponent  Hilary Clinton appreciated the way she ran a very hard-fought campaign and lauded her for having worked hard during her long career: “I’ve just received a call from Secretary Clinton. She congratulated us. It’s about us. On our victory, and I congratulated her and her family on a very, very hard-fought campaign. I mean, she fought very hard. Hillary has worked very long and very hard over a long period of time, and we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country. I mean that very sincerely”.

Pledging that he would be president for all Americans Trump stated: “To all Republicans and Democrats and independents across this nation, I say it is time for us to come together as one united people.”

Terming his election as a movement he said: “It is a movement comprised of Americans from all races, religions, backgrounds, and beliefs, who want and expect our government to serve the people, and serve the people it will. Working together, we will begin the urgent task of rebuilding our nation and renewing the American dream. I’ve spent my entire life in business, looking at the untapped potential in projects and in people all over the world”.

Speaking about rebuilding infra-structure for the public Trump proclaimed: “We are going to fix our inner cities and rebuild our highways, bridges, tunnels, airports, schools, hospitals. We’re going to rebuild our infrastructure, which will become, by the way, second to none, and we will put millions of our people to work as we rebuild it”.

Calling his victory historic and maintaining that he would always put American interest first Trump said: “We will deal fairly with everyone. All people and all other nations. We will seek common ground, not hostility; partnership, not conflict. And now I would like to take this moment to thank some of the people who really helped me with this, what they are calling tonight a very, very historic victory”.

BEIJING: As Republican Donald Trump claimed surprising victory in US polls, China on Wednesday said it will work with the new US President to ensure the steady and sound development of bilateral ties.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang made the remarks at a regular news briefing here as Republican Donald Trump moved to the brink of winning the White House.

Trump has been elected the 45th President of the United States in a shocking defeat of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. He scored a series of surprising wins in battleground states including Florida and Ohio on Tuesday, opening a path to the White House for the political outsider and rattling world markets counting on a win by Clinton.

With investors worried a Trump victory could cause economic and global uncertainty, the US dollar sank and stock markets slammed into reverse in wild Asian trading. Opinion polls before Election Day had given Clinton a slim lead.

In a presidential campaign that focused more on the character of the candidates than on policy, Clinton, 69, a former US secretary of state, and Trump, 70, accused each other of being fundamentally unfit to lead the country.
