Anti-Riot Police enters the Punjab Assembly

LAHORE: Following the mishandling of Deputy Speaker on Saturday (16th of April, 2022)  Anti-Riot Force (wearing bulletproof jackets) has carried out an operation in the Punjab Assembly against the agitators and arrested three MPAs who assaulted Dost Muhammad Mazari.

Nevertheless, the MPAs were still agitating at 4.30pm. Treasury and Opposition members got engaged in slapping and hitting each other. In order to contain the situation Deputy Speaker called the Anti-Riot Police.

Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari said that he was attacked by PTI MPAs  Umer Butt, Nadeem Qureshi, Wasiq Abbasi and Shuja Nawaz.

He demanded police to contain the ruckus. In his letter to the Police Chief he said that he presided over the session as per the order of LHC but treasury members manhandled him attempting to sabotage the session.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Vice President PML-N, stated: “The gang of thugs whose name is PTI, seeing their defeat in Punjab, started bullying again. Was snatched, he will take back Punjab. Chief Minister Hamza Shahbaz Insha Allah!”

The Punjab Assembly session that was supposed to commence at 11.30am in order to conduct the election for the new CM did not start till well-passed 5 pm. As PTI and PML-Q MPAs continued their attacks, Anti-Riot Police wearing Bulletproof Jackets, controlled the situation.

Following that Deputy Speaker commenced the session at 5.30 pm. As soon as the session started the PTI, PML-Q members walked out.

PM Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack on the deputy speaker int eh strongest terms: “PTI/PMLQ MPAs attack on Dy Speaker inside Punjab Assembly must be condemned in strongest terms possible. This blatant display of violence & hooliganism is fascism, pure & simple. IK’s desperation & incitement to violence is rupturing our society. He is attacking democracy itself.”

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman PPP-P, while condemning the attack on Dost Muhammad Mazari stated that it was not just an attack on the Punjab Assembly but also on the Courts of Law: “Attack on deputy speaker Punjab is not only an attack on the Punjab assembly, it’s an attack on our courts who had ruled he conduct elections today, an attack on our democracy, an attack on our constitution, an attack on our federation and an attack on the people of South Punjab.”
