Are Pak-Indian FMs having backchannel talks in UAE?

Since Pakistani FM Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will remain in UAE for a couple of days, sources are insinuating that both the FMs are having back-channel talks attempting to ease tensions on Sunday (18th of April, 2021).

Though Indian media is trumpeting a rendezvous involving the two FMs, Foreign Office of Pakistan, negating any meeting, has stated: “No such meeting is scheduled during Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s ongoing visit to the UAE.”

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi commenting on the rumors said that there were definitely problems to resolve: “But there is not need of back-channel talks. I have not come to UAE to talk to India”.  

Taking to the Twitter Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi commented on his visit to the site of Expo Dubai: “Great visit to the site of Expo 2020 Dubai, a landmark achievement for the UAE and the entire region. Pakistan is delighted to be a part of Expo 2020 with the Pakistan Pavilion, in collaboration with the government of UAE”. 

 

“Spoke to Foreign Minister Mohammad Haneef Atmar on bilateral relations & evolving Afghan Peace Process. We support reconciliation in Flag of Afghanistan and progress in peace process, in Istanbul. I look forward to meeting FM Atmar at Istanbul Conf & to hosting him in Pakistan soon after to discuss a way forward post conference,” FM Qureshi stated.

“Good to be in the UAE and to have met the Pakistan Business Council Dubai for a constructive session on Economic Diplomacy. The Pakistani community in the UAE continue to play a positive role across all echelons of business & work with great contributions to the development of Pakistan and UAE,” FM Shah Mahmood Qureshi Tweeted.

It is pertinent to mention here that Yousef Al Otaiba, Ambassador of  UAE to USA, has stated that UAE was mediating to bring about a healthy and functional  terms between two nuclear neighbors.

H. E. participating at a virtual discussion with Stanford University’s Hoover Institution on 14th of April, 2021 held that the UAE had played a role “in bringing Kashmir escalation down and created a ceasefire, hopefully ultimately leading to restoring diplomats and getting the relationship back to a healthy level…

“…They might not sort of become best friends but at least we want to get it to a level where it’s functional, where it’s operational, where they are speaking to each other,” the Envoy added.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi arrived in UAE Saturday 17th of April, 2021 on a three-day official visit. He is scheduled to call on a number of UAE dignitaries including his counterpart Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan to discuss regional and global issues.

The two sides will also ponder over means to augment bilateral cooperation in trade & investment, job opportunities and welfare of Pakistani diaspora. It is pertinent to mention here that UAE harbors the second largest Pakistani community abroad. The two countries enjoy strong ties profoundly rooted in common faith and norms.

Speaking at a Iftar dinner hosted by Pakistan Business Council here, FM claimed that the PTI-led incumbent government with its economic diplomacy had successfully attracted the world towards the business opportunities available in Pakistan.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that it was a matter of satisfaction that despite Pandemic Pakistan had achieved positive results by means of its diplomacy. Maintaining that the aim of his visit was to promote Pak-UAE trade terms he stated that bilateral relations in diverse fields had improved.
