KARACHI: On Ashura (10th day of Muharram, Wednesday 17th July, 2024) Shia Muslims are paying homage to Imam Hussain (grandson of Holy Prophet PBUH) and others who sacrificed their lives at the field of Karbala, by marching on the roads carrying Alums and other Shia religious symbols, many resorting to self-flagellation mourning the tragedy that happened 1400 years ago.
In Karachi, traditionally men, women and children march 10kms on M.A. Jinnah Road from Nishtar Park to Kharadar. In the walled city 1000 wardens, 140 patrolling officers, 210 senior traffic wardens and six circle officers are making sure that the Ashura procession safely reaches Imambargah Karbala Ghamay Shah.
Imambargah Colonel Maqbool was the starting point of Islamabad’s main juloos that terminated at Imambargah Qadeemi at Maghrib. In Peshawar the juloos concluded at 4pm after marching on GT Road and passing through the Mukri Bazaar service road.
The markazi matmi juloos in Multan, that commenced early in the morning, terminated at Dargah Shah Shams Tabrez. In the Province of Balochistan the main mourning procession marched on Alamdar Road. Four thousand officers and jawans of LEAs oversaw the Hyderabad procession.
