VIENNA: Austrian troops airlifted a group of German students stranded at a snowbound ski resort today, as emergency services scrambled to clear record snowfall across large parts of the country.
The army said it used two helicopters to transport the group of 66 pupils and teachers from the central ski station of Kasberg in Gruenau.
It had been cut off for days due to the heavy snowfall covering much of the west and center of the country.
The group, from Dortmund in western Germany, arrived there last Saturday, but the station was forced to shut a few days ago due to the risk of avalanches, falling trees, and power blackouts.
Austria has been hit by record snowfall for more than a week. Many roads have been impassible because of a lack of the road salt needed to grit them.
A break in the weather enabled soldiers, firefighters, other public employees, and volunteers to clear some of the snow on Friday, but more is expected at the weekend.
Some 500 soldiers have been drafted in to clear roads and roofs in the most heavily affected areas, and a further 1,000 soldiers are on standby, the government said.

5.3 quake shakes southwest China
HONG KONG: A shallow 5.3 earthquake shook China’s southwest Sichuan Province on Saturday, less than a week after a larger quake in the same region killed 13 and left dozens injured.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the earthquake that occurred at about 10.30pm (0230 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), according to the US Geological Survey.
It hit about 18 kilometers east of the town of Xunchang and 43 kilometers southeast of Yibin city, which has a population of some 250,000 people, USGS said.
An earthquake near Yibin struck on Monday, forcing more than 8,000 people to relocate as a large number of structures were damaged or collapsed.
State TV showed rescuers dragging survivors to safety from the rubble, while cracks appeared in several roads and a major highway was closed.
Earthquakes regularly strike Sichuan, where a powerful 7.9-magnitude quake left 87,000 people dead or missing in 2008.
