Beauty and the Beast breaks Batman v Superman’s records

LOS ANGELES: Emma Watson-starrer musical romantic fantasy film Beauty and the Beast smashed a record on box office in the opening week.

The film, which is a live-action remake of 1991 animated movie of the same name, witnessed a 97% growth in its collection from Friday to Sunday.

The opening weekend collection of the movie is three times higher than the opening weekend business of films like Cinderella, Moana and Zootopia.

“What’s noteworthy is, the opening weekend biz of Beauty and the Beast is almost three times higher than Cinderella, Moana and Zootopia,” trade analyst Taran Adarsh posted on Twitter on Monday.

Internationally, Beauty and the Beast set a record for a March opening in North America, Exhibitor Relations reported. The previous record was set last year by Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, with $166 million.

Besides Watson, the film, which has been directed by Bill Condon, also features Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Kevin Kline and Josh Gad.
