Benazir Bhutto murder convict Khurram Shahzad reinstated as SSP Special Branch

LAHORE: Khurram Shahzad, a police officer who was convicted by an anti-terrorism court in Benazir Bhutto’s murder case, has been reinstated as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Special Branch.

Shahzad and former City Police Officer (CPO) Rawalpindi Saud Aziz were released from prison after a division bench of LHC suspended their conviction and granted them bail in the assassination case of former prime minister. The court ordered both the accused to submit Rs.1 million surety bonds each.

The anti-terrorism court had punished the officers for ‘facilitating [the] commission of an offense’ as the policemen were charged for washing out the crime scene.

The police officers challenged their conviction in the LHC’s Rawalpindi Bench and their pleas were heard by a divisional bench that comprised Justice Tariq Abbasi and Justice Habibullah Amir.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) have challenged the verdict in the LHC, seeking harsher punishment for the accused.
