Bloomberg announces US presidential candidacy

NEW YORK: Michael Bloomberg has formally announced here on Sunday (24th of Nov.) joining 17 candidates vying to be Democratic nominee to take on Trump in 2020.

77-year-old Bloomberg stated on his web-page that he was running for president to defeat Donald Trump and rebuild America. The announcement ended speculation about the intentions of Bloomberg, who for weeks has been filing paperwork to be eligible as a candidate in primary voting and registered with the Federal Election Commission.

Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York maintained: “We cannot afford four more years of President Trump’s reckless and unethical actions…He represents an existential threat to our country and our values. If he wins another term in office, we may never recover from the damage.”

It is pertinent to mention here that the Big Apple Billionaire Bloomberg’s businesses including selling financial data services employ over 19,000 people in 69 countries. With a personal fortune of $50bn, Bloomberg is all set to shake up the race.

It transpired via national polls that former vice president Joe Biden leads the race ahead of left-wingers Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, with moderate Pete Buttigieg in fourth place.

Meanwhile, a $30m Bloomberg ad campaign hits US airwaves. Presidential candidate and United States Senator from Vermont Bernie Sanders said that he was disgusted by the amounts of money billionaires put into presidential campaigns and singled out the latest ad purchases by Michael Bloomberg as unacceptable.

Bernie Sanders took to the twitter to hold: “I’m disgusted by the idea that Michael Bloomberg or any billionaire thinks they can circumvent the political process and spend tens of millions of dollars to buy elections. If you can’t build grassroots support for your candidacy, you have no business running for president.”
