ISLAMABAD/TEHRAN: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa talked to Irani Chief of the Armed Forces Maj Gen Mohammad Hossein Bagheri by means of telephone and discussed matters related to border security and prevailing virus-crisis on Monday 11th of May, 2020.
The duo expressed their resolve to augment security measures on either side of the border. They also discussed the recent terrorist attack on Pak security forces resulting in martyrdom of six security personnel near Pak-Iran border.
Pak Army Chief, while telling Maj Gen Bagheri that Pakistan had commenced fencing the border, reiterated that still mutual bilateral corporation was pertinent to contain the menace of smuggling and endure border security.
State of affairs vis-a-vis COVID-19 Pandemic and need to improve border terminals to address such issues was also discussed. Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa expressed Pakistan’s desire for regional peace and stability on the basis of mutual respect, non-interference and equality.
Recently, learning that Coronavirus Epidemic had claimed 8 lives across western border, Pakistan had temporarily closed its border with Iran at Taftan. Balochistan Govt. had declared emergency in cities close to Iran and imposed ban on travel of pilgrims into Iran via road.

Balochistan Disaster Management Authority had been directed by the CM to establish a 100-bed tent hospital at the Pak-Iran border crossing in Taftan. Screening of those pilgrims staying at Pakistan House had also been carried out.
While the tent hospital was being erected, a team of doctors from Islamabad had arrived .Following Pakistan and Kuwait, Turkey too had announced that it would close its border with Iran due to news about Coronavirus deaths there.
At one point Irani Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had insinuated that the negative propaganda about Coronavirus Epidemic was aimed at discouraging voters in general election.
