SANA MAHMOOD

KARACHI: Waheed Murad, known as chocolate hero, was born (today) on October 2, 1938 in Sialkot.

After early schooling he did his bachelors from Karachi’s S.M. Arts College and Masters in English Literature from Karachi University.

In 1959 he commenced his career at the age of 21 with a brief appearance in the movie Saathi.

His creation Armaan, while transforming him from a starlet to a superstar, also turned out to be a game-changer in the nascent film industry scenario of Pakistan.

After that he never looked back and reigned the silver screen for two decades of 60s and 70s.

He died at the age 45 and was buried in Lahore’s Gulberg Graveyard.

Youngsters of this era may wonder what this term ‘chocolate hero’ means: There was a time when pictures of handsome boys used to adorn chocolate boxes and thus the term.

In the celluloid world chocolate hero is someone like Waheed Murad who is known for his fresh (somewhat girlish) face & romantic scenes. He will be remembered for a long time for those roles.
