Coronavirus: Vaccine developed by Moderna Therapeutics

SEATTLE: An experimental vaccine – containing a genetic code copied from the virus that causes the Coronavirus – is being injected into 45 volunteers at Kaiser Permanente research facility here.

According to sources a volunteer received the experimental coronavirus vaccine in the first clinical trial with people. Moderna Therapeutics went from sequencing the virus’ genetic information to shipping a vaccine candidate to US health officials in 42 days.

According to Moderna Therapeutics‘ CEO Stephane Bancel the trial will focus on determining the vaccine’s safety by giving it to 45 healthy volunteers in the Seattle area.

Though, in order to contain the Pandemic scientists all over the world are fast-tracking the research, savants are of the view that it will take a number of months, may be a year, to know whether this (or other vaccines being developed by researchers) would work or not.

It is pertinent to mention here that the developer of the vaccine Moderna Therapeutics, claiming that it had been made using a tried and tested process deemed it fit to use on humans, sidestepping the general practice of first experimenting on animals.

The human trial is being funded by the National Institutes of Health.

According to an estimate thirty-five companies and academic institutions are endeavoring to create a vaccine to contain the Pandemic and at least four have already  tested in animals.
