COVID-19: Chinese scientists find anti-bodies

BEIJING: Chinese scientists have successfully isolated highly effective anti-bodies that could be used to combat the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Tsinghua University’s Zhang Linqi, commenting on the development, stated that anti-bodies developed will be  more effective than the approaches like plasma that is restricted by blood type.

The team of scientists is presently concentrating on identifying the most powerful antibodies and possibly combining them to mitigate the risk of the new coronavirus mutating. In case of positive results it could be mass produced to be tested on animals and then on humans.

Deciphering the modus operandi Zhang stated: “The importance of antibodies has been proven in the world of medicine for decades now. They can be used to treat cancer, autoimmune diseases and infectious diseases.”

It is pertinent to mention here that antibodies are not a vaccine but could be given to those at risk in order to prevent them from contracting Covid-19. Antibodies, according to Zhang will be tested on humans by September, 2020.

Infectious disease specialist Ben Cowling who is associated with the University of Hong Kong noted: “There’s a number of steps which will now need to be followed before it could be used as a treatment for coronavirus patients. But it’s really exciting to find these potential treatments, and then have a chance to test them out. Because if we can find more candidates, then eventually we’ll have better treatment.”
