Hand-grenade attack on a mini-truck in Karachi’s Mawach Goth kills 13

KARACHI: Three unidentified gunmen riding a motorbike opened fire and threw (Russia-made) RGD1 hand-grenade (harboring 65g explosive) at the passengers of a  Shehzore mini-truck after following it here in Baldia Town’s Mawach Mor at 9.45PM  Saturday (14th August, 2021)  killing thirteen members of a family. 

According to sources the mini-truck was carrying two dozen members of a family that hailed from Swat. They were heading back home after attending a marriage ceremony in the port city. Initial probe revealed while the grenade exploded in the air before touching the floor of the truck. Ten bodies (of six women and four male children aged between 10- to 12 years) have been taken to Dr. Ruth Pfau Hospital. Seven other members of the same family, who  suffered burn injuries, are being treated in the same hospital’s burn section.

Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has asked the DG Rangers and IG Sindh for report of the incident. Meanwhile, the truck driver has been taken into custody. CM Sindh too had taken notice of the crime and instructed that the wounded by provided best possible medical aid. Administrator Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab took to the Twitter to inform: “I just returned from the Trauma Centre along with Owais Shah. So far i can confirm 11 casualties & 9 people are injured out of whom 2 are critical. Doctors are doing their best to save the lives of the injured & whatever treatment or surgery that needs to take place will be done.”

AIG Police, while talking to NPTV said that it was too early to say who was behind the attack: it could be a family dispute or an act of terrorism. He said that the personnel of LEAs were working on the case and would soon reach the culprits. It is pertinent to mention here that Bomb Disposal Squad had found the lever of the grenade used to kill and injure 20 members of the same family.

The deceased were identified as Mrs Shaheen Khan, 45; her daughter Nusrat, 25; Sufiyan Shamsheer, 13; his brother Hammad, 11; Usman Khan, 15; Ms Aqsa Sher Ali, 25; Mrs Sharafat Meraj Khan, Mrs Malkiat, 50, Mrs Saleema, 47,  Zoyan Izhar, 1; Salman, 12; and Mrs Sadaqat Dildar, 40-years-old.

Their Namaz-e-Janaza was attended by a considerably large congregation of local residents. Conspicuous among others there were PPP’s (Minister Labour, Information and Human Resources) Saeed Ghani, PTI’s Haleem Adil Shaikh, PPO’s Abdul Qadir Mandokhail , JUI-F’s Aslam Ghouri, ANP’s Younous Bonari, and several members of JI.
