Supreme Court of Bangladesh scraps job-quotas

DHAKA: Following the death of 165 people (including that of several cops) during the students-led protests against the job-quotas (for the heirs of the so-called heroes of 1971), the Supreme Court of Bangladesh (SCB) ordered to open 93% of government jobs on merit to aspirants.

Curfew had been imposed here on Saturday (20th July, 2024). Government had suspended the internet and text message services making it difficult for the world to know about the violent clashes that had also injured 2500 in a week of protests.

Students Against Discrimination‘s top leader Nahid Islam (who was badly thrashed by undercover cops) had suspended the shutdown protests for a couple of days, demanding lifting of curfew, restoration of internet and halting actions against students who participated in the manifestations.
