Diplomat Yusuf Buch passes away at 98

NEW YORK: Yusuf Buch, a former Pakistani cabinet minister, and diplomat, passed away on Friday evening at his home in New York. He was 98.

Buch, who is best known as an eminent expert on the Kashmir dispute, was not keeping good health lately and had returned to his apartment from a hospital three days ago.

From 1972 to 77, he worked for former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto as his special assistant. He then served as Pakistan’s ambassador to Switzerland.

Later, Buch joined the United Nations at a senior position and worked as a speechwriter for former UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim until his retirement in 1991.

Buch came to the United States in 1953 as a winner of an International Essay Contest sponsored by the United Nations. Later, he ran a Free-Kashmir Centre in New York from 1957 to 1972.

He has written extensively on the issues of South Asia and Kashmir. He is known as the authority on the issues related to Kashmir.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UN, Maleeha Lodhi, expressed her deep sadness over Buch’s death, saying that he participated in the resistance and his writings and pronouncements on Kashmir provided intellectual stimulus to the freedom movement.

“Few could match his knowledge of Kashmir. its history, culture, and evolution of the freedom movement. I had often encouraged him to write his memoirs but he felt his age did not give him the strength to do so,” she added.

In a statement, prominent Kashmiri leader Ghulam Nabi Fai said that Buch was a living encyclopedia on Kashmir. “He lived an illustrious life of courage and dedicated his life for the cause of Kashmir,” he said, adding that he was a “real freedom fighter and a true legend.”

Shifting of DCs: IHC seeks report from ministry




ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) Tuesday sought a report from Ministry of Interior in a petition seeking shifting of the district court to an appropriate place and adjourned hearing till 18th September.
Chief Justice Athar Minallah, hearing the case, remarked that there should be a model system of the judiciary in the federal capital to provide justice to the citizens at their doorstep.
There was no benefit if the citizen had no trust in the judiciary, he observed.
The court ordered deputy commissioner Islamabad and president District Bar Association (DBA) to hold a meeting tomorrow to discuss the issue.
The Chief Justice remarked that the lower courts should be shifted at the appropriate place to relieve the applicants.
He observed that why the deputy commissioner did not comply with the court orders in this regard.
The bench sought a report from the Interior Ministry and adjourned the hearing of the case.

Sino-Pak automobile companies hold B2B meetings



China Pakistan Flags

LAHORE: Pakistan-China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) on Tuesday conducted various business-to-business (B2B) meetings in the automobile sector at the Punjab Agri Expo 2019.
The PCJCCI initiated the meeting with Shifeng and Dailuda, a leading Chinese agricultural machinery and automobile manufacturing company. Various companies like Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts and Accessories Manufacturers, Guard Group, Master Motor Corporation, Jaffer Brothers, Rimtaj Industries and Sazgar Engineering Works Limited were part of the meeting.
On this occasion, PCJCCI Secretary General Salahuddin Hanif, and Everest International Expo CEO, Fa Wen Yen said that such B2B meetings would help develop smooth bilateral trade between Pakistan and China.
During the inauguration of B2B session, Salahuddin Hanif said, “These sessions will open new vistas of opportunities for Pakistani investors and their Chinese counterparts.” He especially mentioned the keen interest of Dailuda and Shifeng which was exhibiting products like tractors, truck, three-wheelers, diesel engine, and electric vehicle and other automobile products at this expo. He was of the view that counseling with the Chinese business community was mandatory to increase the quantum of trade and investment opportunities in Pakistan.
He claimed that the PCJCCI expedited the efforts to hold business-to-business exhibition with the aim to provide a one-stop shop for all industry products from processing technology to the finished products, which would help develop bilateral relations between Pakistan and China.
Mr. Niu Zhi, representative of Shifeng and Dailuda Company said, “We want to introduce innovative contemporary technology of Europe to Pakistan.” He mentioned that new construction machinery from China was equivalent to the price of used and old construction machinery at the moment being imported from Europe.
While PCJCCI Executive Committee members Daud Ahmad and Farooq Ali Khan Sherwani said that China had been an incredible support to Pakistan at all times. The continuous assistance of China would do wonders for the emerging economic status of Pakistan and these B2B meetings would certainly have a positive impact on the business community, they observed.

Pakistan-EU sign Strategic Engagement Plan

BRUSSELS: Strategic Engagement Plan (SEP), meant to boost bilateral terms, has been signed here today by Pakistan and EU. 

Pak FM Shah Mehmood Qureshi and EU High Rep. Federica Mogherini while addressing a Press Conference maintained that SEP was a long-term resolve to boost cooperation. It is pertinent to mention here that this framework includes understanding to promote mutual peace and prosperity, trade and investment, migrant issues, sustainable development, energy, education, and culture.

FM Qureshi told that Pakistan and EU would also benefit from each other’s experience apropos cybersecurity and money laundering. He was optimistic about new prospects in knowledge exchange, people to people contacts, development projects, and good governance. Commenting on Re-Admission Agreement Qureshi said that Pakistan and EU were committed to close cooperation under this banner. 

Foreign Minister said Pakistan and the European Union would work to further expand and solidify trade and investment relations under the umbrella of SEP. Shah Mehmood Qureshi said Pakistan’s foreign policy depended in the relation between peace and development.
