Don’t revoke Iran nuclear deal, it prevented war, Obama tells Trump

WASHINGTON: The nuclear agreement with Iran last year was the results of years of hard work and it prevented nuclear war between two countries, said the outgoing US President Barack Obama in a message to his successor, President-elect Donald Trump on Monday.

“The United States must remember that this agreement was the result of years of work, and represents an agreement between the world’s major powers — not simply the United States and Iran,” Obama said.

His comments came on the occasion of marking the first anniversary of the Iran nuclear deal’s implementation.

Trump, who will take charge as the POTUS on Jan 20, earlier hinted at re-examining the deal and said that the Washington may demand more restrictions on Tehran.

In reply, Iranian authorities said that Tehran may walk out of the deal if Washington imposed new conditions.

In his message, the US president warned the authorities that the challenges the US faces today would be much worse without the agreement.

“A diplomatic resolution that prevents Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon is far preferable to an unconstrained Iranian nuclear programme or another war in the Middle East,” he said.

He added that the deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), had already achieved significant, concrete results in making the United States and the world a safer place.
